A lot of companies are currently getting into or thinking about doing so in relations with the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) program. We now have T-Mobile stepping up and offering one year of HotSpot access for individuals that decide to purchase an XO laptop in the current get one give one program. OLPC stated that this “give one get one” is the only appearance of the revolutionary XO laptop, making it available for the public. You, the individual, have to make a donation of $399 and $200 of this sum is currently tax deductible. This donation brings in a “gift of education”. OLPC also highlighted the fact that T-Mobile will offer one year of complimentary access to the network’s HotSpots locations in the US for every single donor. This means that they can use any Wi-Fi capable device to do so, including this XO laptop.

Also, mass production of the new XO laptop started recently and the T-Mobile access is actually valued at around $360. This is because the HotSpot plan is currently $29.99 and OLPC started sales on the 12th of November. According to various reports the volume of XOs produced will get higher as time passes. The most important milestone in this OLPC project was already reached with the mass production announced and this new T-Mobile bonus seems to be just the cherry on top. It is good to know that we are currently speaking about the “greenest laptop” currently manufactured and the XO has been labeled as one that was created in order to instill the passion of learning in children. On the other hand, we are still talking about marketing and a world driven on money. We still have no signs of success with OLPC but expectations are quite high. Unfortunately all we can do is wait and see what happens.
