Sony keeps on claiming that the HD battle going on in formats is just a matter of prestige but we all know this is not the case as the Blu-Ray Disc Association wastes no time in letting people know when different sales milestones are reached. We thus now know that 2.7 million Blu-Ray Disc players have been sold in North America. This also includes the number of Sony PlayStation 3 video consoles sold, even if the user utilizes it to play Blu-Ray discs or not.

According to various reports, the actual number of stand alone Blu-Ray players on the market is just around 700,000 units. This is because we have 2 million PS3s sold at the moment. On the other hand, we are also dealing with more Blu-Ray Disc hardware manufacturers when compared to HD DVD players. Also, if everything is accurate in released stats, around 74 percent of the highly praised Blu-Ray Disc players in North America are actually Sony PlayStation 3 consoles. We are also faced with the North American HD DVD Promotional Group releasing their sales data at the end of Black Friday. It seems that there are over 750,000 HD DVD players currently sold in North America. The problem is that this also includes the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive add-on. On the other hand, we do know that those that purchased the Xbox 360 hardware accessory for HD DVD also utilize such high definition discs. The one thing that is for sure is that the format war is still on and we might not have a winner for a long, long time. Nielsen VideoScan data showed that 72.6 percent of all high definition discs bought were Blu-Rays and only 27.4 were HD DVDs. It is still hard to say and the inclusion of the Xbox 360 and the PS3 into the stats will not be as accurate as to us understanding which one is more popular.
