Bell Simpatico Admits to Internet Traffic Management
By Robert | November 15, 2007
Bell Simpatico is the latest Internet service provider that admitted they are traffic shaping. This is done via traffic management on different heavy users and is done through peak hours. One forum administrator wrote on the company’s support forum that they are using “Internet Traffic Management” in order to restrict accounts and this is how the news became official. It seems there are many applications affected by the ISP’s moves including popular P2P software like BitTorrent, eMule, Limewire, Kazaa and eDonkey.
Another manager immediately added that there is huge growth around the world when it comes to Internet traffic consummation and that Bell Simpatico is simply using Internet Traffic Management in order to assure that bandwidth is always fair for clients during peak Internet use hours. It seems that this system was included last year and there are claims that it does not affect the majority of Bell Simpatico’s users.
Different ISPs from around the world have found themselves having to deal with increases in bandwidth usage with the appearance of different file and video sharing utilities available. Most specialists tend to believe that around 30 to 50 percent of all Internet traffic is in some way related to P2P. More than that, Ipoque conducted a recent survey and there are claims that the number is actually around 90 percent. This is what led to many ISPs to employ different techniques in making possible what is labeled as “fair share”, one subject that currently holds a huge debate around it, mainly because of network neutrality. The biggest reports seem to appear with Comcast with different reports showing that the company is imposing a 600 GB bandwidth limit on what is supposed to be unlimited service. Also, the ISP was shown to impersonate BitTorrent clients in order to get involved in their connections. Who knows how many providers do this?
