When we say “Service Pack” or “SP1”, most of us immediately think about Microsoft’s Windows Vista update. After all, it is the first service pack for this operating system and should bring a lot of performance enhancements and fix bugs, together with improving anti piracy efforts showed by Microsoft. On the other hand we need to realize that we should not only be talking about Windows Vista. Microsoft Office 2007 was also launched recently and it will also receive an update. It is only normal as we are dealing with the best selling productivity suite labeled with Microsoft.

Contrary to popular belief, the update of Office 2007 is moving a lot faster than Vista’s and we will see a Service Pack 1 for Office released on December 11. According to Microsoft, we are dealing with a lot of improvements that were based on consumer or corporate feedback. We are still not sure about the complete list of improvements or features as the company is keeping a tight lid on this. What we do know is that we will see improved support for VSTO v3 and .NET v3.5, better object model documentation aimed towards coding, the compatibility issues with various other Office file formats of the past were corrected and we will also see some changes when talking about DirectX video overlay. Security updates and small bug fixes are also something we can expect as they always appear at every single update.
What you need to know is that SP1 will not be delivered through Automatic Update Deployment because of various concerns exhibited by corporate customers. By doing this, they will be allowed to test the SP before they will add it to their systems. On the other hand, we do not know exactly the details of how regular consumers will receive their Office 2007 Service Pack 1 packages. Microsoft is expected to release an official statement soon.
