FoxTorrent 1.0 - Firefox BitTorrent Add-on
By Robert | April 28, 2007

Red Swoosh have released v1.0 of FoxTorrent today. This a full featured BitTorrent client that is an extension for Firefox. It also comes with some added extras that most BitTorrnet clients don’t have, such as the ability to stream files as they are downloading.
This is no uTorrent or Azureus, but it gets the job done and will help save time by allowing you to manage all your torrents directly from within the browser itself. I tested it earlyer today on a few torrents and it worked great on the normal BitTorrent functionality. Streaming just didn’t work for me at all. The way BitTorent works is by breaking the file down into many smaller pieces and downloading them it the easiest order, not always from start to finish.
This means that streaming a file before it has fully finished would only be possible when the file is almost 100% complete and would make the streaming feature almost useless. You would need to find this very convenient to use for a full time BitTorrent solution but if you hate leaving Firefox to manage your Torrents then FoxTorrent might just be the solution for you. I think I will stick to uTorrent for now.

Streaming should work shortly after the download starts… that’s why it’s called streaming. But there is a known issue with the DivX player on the mac. Try on windows for now.
It works by downloading the file sequentially.

I was using Windows for the test. I find that some file formats stream better then others. The more I use it the more I’m starting to like it.
