BlackBerry 8800 Series, What’s New?

The traditional built-for-business BlackBerry gets a pearl inspired polish while also picking up a few more ticks in the 8800 line.

The most obvious trait is of course the translucent white trackball, which replaces the side-mounted and much of the painful “BlackBerry thumb” associated with it.

The shift to front-mounted navigation also makes the 8800 a better device for left-handers, but we found the device produced mixed results depending on the task. The free-wheeling motion is a boon for scrolling through emails and clutter inboxes, though the lack of any dents makes it difficult to move it smaller steps for task such as navigating menus and the home screens.

The other call-out feature is the in built GPS receiver and bundled BlackBerry maps of major cities. However the maps were unavailable at the time of this review, although you can purchase alternative BlackBerry-based mapping solutions or access Google maps.

Another hand-me-down from the pearl is highly accurate voice dialing, which works for any string of numbers as well as mane already in the address books.

Alas, the tightly packed keyboard represents no step forward from the 8700 family. With almost no gap between each key, you’ll want small fingers and an accurate touch to get back to a decent two finger typing speed.

With the 8800’s screen is the same 2.5in size as that of the 8700, it employs the substantially brighter and richer display module of the 8100 Pearl for far sharper text and move vibrant images. Light-sensing technology adjust the backlighting of the screen(as well as keyboard and trackball) based on the current ambient light.

in keeping with the slightly more consumer look 8800’s elongated design, slim profile and chrome fairing, RIM has also fitted 8800’s with the Pearl’s multimedia engine for a little down time between meetings . Music and video (the later is restricted to a hand full of formats) can be loaded onto a microSD card, which slips into the rear panel.

Battery life is still one area where the BlackBerry excels, with our test unit clocking three days between chargers.
