The whole bogosphere is taking about Google’s OpenSocial API. Many are saying that it is a very good move by the company and that its benefits are numerous, mainly concerning the creation of a web platform that is going to be attractive to everybody, even more than the social network could be if not utilizing it. These bloggers are probably big fans of Google as they are not discussing the actual reason why individuals are using social networks. OpenSocial lacks the one ingredient that is needed when dealing with any social networking site. We are talking about the actual network. It is clear to see that Google’s OpenSocial is aimed towards competing with Facebook one way or the other but people are not joining the web site to utilize any widget available. They do it in order to exchange messages, photos and to keep in touch with different friends in one way or the other. The utilization of different widgets is just an added plus that is kind of popular for some users. The biggest problem with any social networking site that is starting out like Friendster or LinkedIn is that people do not want to join many such web sites.

I keep getting invitations from different new social networks and I do not sign up because all my friends are on hi5.com. There are a lot more users like myself that have all their friends on Facebook, just as I have on hi5. OpenSocial does not come with such function ability and all it provides is an environment that will make it possible to create different widgets with a higher degree of simplicity. Google offers features that will not have a direct impact on Facebook and probably the biggest win the company could have is get the popular web site to get on the list of OpenSocial supporters. In such a case Google would have the victory but it would be a victory that is highly different that what they really wanted in the past.
