MySpace and Google Continue Good Work on OpenSocial

Nobody really expected this to happen but when we think about it, we must say that it does seem like a good move. MySpace recently announced that they will not build their own third party developer platform for their social network and they will support Google’s OpenSocial APIs.MySpace launched an official press release that highlighted some interesting facts. It seems that the two companies are actually joining forces in launch OpenSocial. It is a set of common APIs that are aimed in building social network applications across the Internet. Everything boils down to an initiative aimed to create a standard development platform for social applications that is focused on simplicity rather than complete diversity as it is at the moment. What is interesting is that Google and MySpace are currently working on this project for a long time. A past report issued by Eric Schmidt, Google CEO, highlighted the fact that the two companies have been working on secret on OpenSocial for more than one year. It is strange how news about this did not leak until recently so we can expect something special.

There are different reports going on that highlight the fact that a lot of partners are getting involved on this project. This includes but is not limited to Bebo, Friendster, hi5, Hyves, imeen, LinkedIn, Oracle, Ning, Plaxo, Six Apart, XING and a whole lot more. Well, it seems that Google is working their magic in attempting to attack Facebook. It will be interesting to see whether or not Facebook will have to join OpenSocial when such a coalition is getting formed. The only other version possible would be to see Facebook develop their own platform for creating API but still it would be quite difficult to handle OpenSocial if it becomes a standard for social networking.
