Mirco Launched
By Robert | November 15, 2007

We have a new open source video player on the market in Miro. The non profit company that is currently backing it has announced it as a competitor for Joost and actually a better one. There are a lot of advantages for choosing Miro. First we have the fact that it is open source and then we are not faced with DRM. It is of course connected with all the video sharing sites that count including blip.tv and YouTube and comes with high definition and a lot of content. To make it even better, it is also BitTorrent compatible.
Joost is owned and appears as exclusive when it comes to content creators, also coming with DRM enabled and no video sharing sites connection. There is a visible lack of content, we do not have high definition and only streaming is available. On the other hand, both Miro and Joost are good at some points. Miro is quite similar in functionality with iTunes and we can download different videos we might want. Miro will also help in transforming streaming video into downloads from YouTube, a fact that will be loved by a lot of users. You can choose what to download but you will not view it instantly as we are not dealing with streaming but downloading.
Joost on the other hand appears better when talking about professional content. In using Miro you might end up having to browse through a lot of material if you are looking for content produced by professionals (ie. TV shows). And then, when you find it you will need to wait for different videos to load through BitTorrend so this means that you will depend on other users and how much they seed that particular video. Mirco will be put up for co-branding soon and this means that we might see new versions of the player on the market soon.
