Microsoft Live Search Gets an Upgrade
By Robert | October 3, 2007

There is no denying in the fact that Google is currently the industry leader when it comes to Internet search. Microsoft aims at dethroning the king as they recently re-designed their Live Search service and issued statements stating that it now offers better relevance, an improved performance and more. According to the company, their main goal in this change is to improve their search service in order to give a better experience to users. On the other hand, it is plain to see that it is a move that aims to win over some Google Search fans.
Microsoft stated that the size of their index is now four times bigger and the internal ranking algorithms used are better than ever. This is said to improve your search results and we can also notice some minor page design modifications. To put it simply, Microsoft’s Live Search looks a little bit more like Google now.
I tried to do some searches on both search engines in order to take a look at the new Live Search and see how it stacks when compared with Google Search. At first view Microsoft’s service is better than it was before but this only in the traditional web search. If you try to look for an image you will get a lot of surprises there for sure. Google Search still is a lot better and wherever Google Search stumbled on the results, Live Search stumbled even more.
Microsoft’s Live Search is definitely not a threat to Google Search but the modifications will be very welcomed by the 185 million people the company claims as monthly search users. Give it a try for yourself and be careful to enable cookies in order to see the new version as you might still end up viewing the old one.
