Box.net recently announced that they will soon launch OpenBox, with the official full release date scheduled on or before December, 5. This means that the online storage provider will have an open source platform available for any web developer that wants to create some sort of “Service action” on Box.net, which will make it possible to load files easier into any 3rd party application required. Such “Service actions” might also make it possible for users to put their data back on Box.net, after editing somewhere else of course. As far as we see it, OpenBox is meant to help box.net in their attempt to change the web site into a special online file system meant to aid users in keeping files that they will eventually want to load in various applications on the Internet.

With the announcement of the new platform, we can think about possibility of service actions for different possible Internet applications. This includes but is not limited to Zazzle, Twitter, Myxer, eFax, Zoho, Autodesk or Echosign. All these are actually options you will notice in a dropdown menu on Box.net by right clicking on content that is hosted on the web site. For instance, we have “Edit Document” when we want to enter a file in Zoho or “Edit with Picnik” if we might need to edit an image in some graphic programs supporting this. With the launch of OpenBox, users will find it a lot easier to set up their own needed service actions in box.net’s point and click web interface. If you do not want that, you should still consider taking a look at the options that have already been included as a launch list of available features. A lot of web developers have announced their enthusiasm to the news of OpenBox launching but it does seem like they need to wait until the 5th of December to see it in action, possibly with even new features.
