Microsoft Sued Over Vista Advertising

Microsoft have been hit with a law suit over misleading it customers with “Vista Capable PC’s” advertising. It is claimed that that PC’s that have a Vista Capable PC’s sticker on them are not capable of running Vista at a level that would be considered usable and it would be without most of the major features.

I hope that Microsoft will lose this one. It should be a lesson to all the software manufactures out there that have a bad habit of understating the minimum requirement of PC’s to run their software.

I have had so many people come to me asking why that can’t run a piece of software or game. I ask them what hardware they have and it is almost always a very low end computer. When I tell them that their computer does not have the horsepower to run that type of software I always hear them say “but it says on the box”.

Most software will run on the minimum specs but how usable it will be is always something completely different.

The minimum spec for a “Vista Capable PC” is:

  • A modern processor (at least 800MHz¹).
  • 512 MB of system memory.
  • A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable.

Now that has to be a joke, come on. There is no way in the world vista is going to be usable on an 800MHz CPU. Yeah sure it will boot but if you try and do anything including moving the mouse you’re going to be in all kinds of trouble.

Even when it comes to the high end versions of Vista you are still highly under quoted the minimum specs:

  • 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor¹).
  • 1 GB of system memory.
  • Support for DirectX 9 graphics with a WDDM driver, 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)², Pixel Shader 2.0 and 32 bits per pixel.
  • 40 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space.
  • DVD-ROM Drive³.
  • Audio output capability.
  • Internet access capability.

Come on Microsoft stop taking advantage of the less informed people and start being a respectable business that people would be proud to be a part of and not the old school sharks that people love to hate.
