Ubuntu Now On Dell’s, Which Would You Choose?

By Robert | May 26, 2007

ubuntu-240px.jpgUbuntu begins shipping on Dell PC’s today. There is a $50 discount for using Ubuntu over Vista and to me that seems a little disappointing but still better then nothing. Ubuntu is be coming more and more main stream as time goes by and now that Dell has adopted the very popular distro it will only get bigger.

The news so far is great as to be expected. The Linux world has been waiting a long time for it’s shot at the big time, and that time is now. It is hoped that a lot more big name manufactures will follow suit and offer an open source solution as well as the very common Windows OS.

The only problem the Ubuntu crowed have now is tiring to get people to buy the new option. It is one thing to offer Linux as an option but it will be a whole new ball game tiring to convince the masses to choose this as an option. I’m sure the number of people that customize the Dell systems from standard when ordering are fairly small compared to the people that don’t. Now you have to break that down even further and work out how many people will opt for Linux over Windows.

I still think this will become more of a “hackers” choice then a Linux lovers choice. It is a very quick and simple way to get your hands on a new computer with out having to pay the premium of Vista or XP. This will leave a very nice hole for pirates to save even more money on not buying software.
