nVidia 8800GTS 640MB vs. 1280MB in SLi Mode - Huge Over Kill?
By Robert | March 24, 2007
To be completely honest, I would have thought that no game or application in the world today would see any benefit from 1280MB’s of RAM over 640MB. After reading this review by TweakTown I was very surprised that they have seen a very decent increased over of a single 640MB card. In reality to get any real advantage you need to be running uber high resolution on a wide screen monitor.
These days wide screen gaming is be coming more and more common even though anti-cheating software like Punkbuster and Vac consider wide screen resolutions as and unfair advantage and will only allow you to stretch a square resolution image over a wide screen aspect. If you don’t mind the stretched look this is a very nice way to play games. Now you can see why these cards for some are not considered over kill but just keeping up with the demands of the latest game and equipment and trying to make them work together as well as possible.
As it stands today I don’t think there is any “need” for a graphics card with 1280MB of RAM and the power usage of a small country but if like to on the bleeding edge at all time it’s starting to look like you we see noticeable increase in performance if you equipment can support it, Which is unusual for bleeding edge technology’s.
If you are running a 19″ monitor @ 1280 x 1024 then I don’t really think that a card with as much horsepower as the 8800 series cards is really going to do anything other then increase the size of your e-penis.
Conclusion
If you like to have bragging rights (Large e-penis) or you just can’t stand to play your games at anything lower then the native resolution of your 30″ wide screen monitor @ 2560 x 1600 and consider lag to be anything below 120 FPS then you will love an 8800 series card. But for most people like me it will be a huge waste of money and power.
Having said all that….I still want one.
