An interesting piece of news comes our way from Lenovo. The company is going into workstation market with the launch of their new line of ThinkStation computers. The first 2 models have been officially announced and they appear bearing Intel’s new 45nm Penryn micro architecture. To make it even better, we are dealing with the new ThinkStation D10, which comes with 2 processor sockets while also supporting Intel’s quad-core Xeon 5400 series processors of course. We also have the ThinkStation S10, which supports Intel’s Core 2 Extreme QX9650 processor.

As expected, both models come with some similarities of course. The first one noticed is dual GbE network ports together with multiple drive bays and the much needed USB 2.0 ports that can not lack being included in a workstation. Talking about graphics, we still do not know any details but we did find out that they will be powered by NVIDIA. Lenovo also aims to gain people that look for eco friendly solutions as they are bearing EPS Energy Star 4.0 compliancy and come with power supplies that are built out of 50% recycled material while reaching an efficiency of 80%.

According to Lenovo’s executive director of Emerging Products Marketing Tom Tobul, the new ThinkStation is aimed to deliver where a standard desktop personal computer is not enough for a user. The company claims to come with the highest performance possible while high quality seems to be almost a synonym in the workstations. Both the ThinkStation D10 and the S10 models can not be purchased at the moment as they will start shipping in January 2008. S10 will come with a price of $1,199 and the D10 with a base price of $1,739. In any case, we are still waiting for an official list of features and hardware configuration in order to realize whether or not Lenovo’s ThinkStations are a viable solution in the field of workstations.
