Default Windows Defender

Anybody use Windows Defender (or whatever it's called). I'm skeptical of any security software coming from Microsoft, shouldn't they be patching the holes in the OS instead?

Windows Defender is one of the three spyware program I have on my computer. I never have spyware, so I can't really comment on it's detection rate, etc. You would think Windows Defender would be good since Microsoft is making it and they make the O/S that everyone is trying to attack.

Download details: Windows® Defender

The only programs from Microsoft I install are the security updates and even then, they tend to lead to additional security updates the following day or week.

Personally, I stick to outside vendors when it comes to Spyware, Malware or Anti-Virus.

Hi,

I am running Defender, and yes it seems okay. Like mentioned before it is really difficult to say how much good compared to bad it does. But it seems to be working well. Of course with Norton as a backup I guess whatever falls out is taken care of.

I used Defender for a while but uninstalled it. We were supposed to join a community where we Defender users watch out for anything that went past. Shouldn't MS do that instead?

I use Defender, and I find it okay. It is not the greatest I would think but it is still okay. I am also part of the community, and I think what MS tried to do is use the masses to assist. Think they finally got the idea of the power behind the masses out there.

I also use Windows Defender. It's not bad, but I never get Adware or Spyware, so their isn't much for it to do.

I downloaded Windows defender for an XP laptop. Don't know if it's really effective but it's free . But I also have SpyBot and AdAware on to be sure. I don't really trust defender. :P

Just for interest sake, does anyone know of a place where they have a comparision between different security programs and the 'security' they offer? It would be interesting to take a platform with a hardware configuration and compare the differnet programs safe keeping abilities......
