Recording Software Solution - Feed The Geeks

I am looking for a semi-good free piece of software that will allow me to record vocals and play them back (pretty simple).

A friend of mine is looking to record over a few beats he has been working on and the software he is using is simple for editing beats and not recording vocals.

Any suggestions would be helpful

Garageband for Macs

For windows, Audacity.

Use Aucustica Mixcraft. It's awesome, but there is just a trial. If you feel like investing it is for you.
