Default Who Hosts Your Site?

What online hosting company do you use to host your site? I've personally tried a very large number of the free hosts. After having difficulty finding one that fit my needs, I set up my own apache web server. Currently, I use noip.net so that I don't need to enter my ip address to access my site. Once I get 100 posts, I'll use my domain name instead.

This site is hosted with Hostgator on a dedicated Quad Core 4 GIG of ram super doper server.

I have never used a free hosting company because I have heard nothing but bad things about them.

Well, apache has worked pretty well for me. It may be the fact that I don't get giant swarms of people to my site at the same time, but it is able to handle a reasonable number of simultaneous connections. It is also free. I don't know how much you are paying for the site, but you might consider checking out apache.

Apache is vey popular on paid servers as well as free ones. This server is running apache and so is about 70% of all servers on the internet. It's extremely securer and very powerfully if you know how to use it.

Yes, but what I'm trying to say is that when you pay for the web host, you pay for customer support, the hardware the server is on, online storage, and the initial setup (including support for scripting languages). If you have good enough hardware, and enough knowledge to set up the server and configure it to your liking, it becomes cheaper to run your own server.

I did think about running my own server at one stage but the internet here in Australia sucks.

My connection now is 8mbit down but only has 384kb/s upload speed which would be ok for a small site but nowhere near what i use now and i don't know enough about Apache to set it up the way i like. You sound like you know more about it then i do. Apache is a bit of a mystery to me.

I really don't know that much about it. I mostly followed guides and help I got on forums to set it up.

It's good to see another person hosting their own site. Apache really makes it simple to do.

I've been doing it myself for about 1 and a half years now... First on an old XP box, then my mac box.
