Has anyone made custom skins for their laptop? Say, at MyTego or anything? I've recently bought a used Dell that had garish stickers on it (and has some scratches, too) that I'd like to cover up. Is there a service you'd recommend for best value or price? Do laptop skins look as cool 'in person' as they do in the online previews?

I've used custom skins for previous laptops, however, they all ended up coming off after a while. I would suppose those that are made of higher quality material may last longer, though the ones I bought certainly were not worth what I paid in the end.

If you're in the market for a laptop skin, make sure you either buy a quality skin or possibly find a distributor offering plastic covers.

I have an old laptop as well, never thought to skin it, but that would be cool. It would sort of give old life to an old good companion through the years, like a face lift

I keep an old box around that's just loaded with"skins". Most are for auto parts places and swap meets. I do have a few that are a bit strange, but having worked for a printing compamy that did labels, stickers or skins if that's what you want to call them. Each machine has it's own theme but each has its required "NUMBER 3". Many manufacturers ship little labels with their plugin products that can be applied to the outside to identify some of the internal parts. I do have one rule though, nothing on the monitor or keyboard.

I've read about AlienWare (before they were bought by Dell) spray painting and souping up Taiwan-made Laptops on which they then slap their brand. Do you think this'll work at home? It'll be fun to spray-paint my old Asus a ferrari-red.

If you are going to paint a laptop, i recommend that you pull it apart first. You don't want paint getting into places it shouldn't.

Sounds like an interesting way to brighten up my old lap too. But Robert's right, we might need to take the casing off and the only thing I know about it is remove the battery, harddrive, and RAM. I'm handy with desktops but not with their portable cousins.

I have no idea what to do with the insides of a laptop. Top many little bits to get lost for my liking.

I think the easiest solution to this is to have a computer company just strip your computer, give you the chassis and you can spray paint. WHen you are done you can ask them to put it all together.

Should be around a 24 hour turn around time I would guess.

You are all too gutsy for my tastes. I think that if you are experienced then you might want to consider that as an option. However I would never recommend it to someone who has no clue what they are going. I would not take it anywhere to have it stripped either. I think that you are better off going with a skin or plastic coating.
