Can someone explain exactly what a mac is and a Linux. I keep hearing about them, but really thought they were just another name for a pc.

Linux is another operating system like windows

. A Mac is a bit like a pc but its short for Macintosh Apple's version of a PC i guess

Hi!

The MacOS is the OS built into a Mac

while GNU/Linux is a server OS that has recently gained a foothold in the desktop environment. The MacOS and GNU/Linux share a common ancestry as both were derived from the venerable UNIX.

I agree to some point.

Mac OS X is the first version of mac to be based on BSD, which is based in UNIX.

Linux is also based on UNIX.

Mac OS X is like a distro of linux with a closed source GUI, kind of.
