Recommended social networking scripts? - Feed The Geeks

Hi!

I'm planning to establish a social networking type of site. I'm looking for open source scripts and has already checked out civicspace, elgg, and aroundme. Any recommendations? Thanks.

Never used any of them, but elgg looks nice.

If your looking to create a unique social networking site with features you want. Your better getting something custom coded if your serious about it. However it will cost a lot so maybe you'd be better looking for a pre-made one to adapt. It depends on your budget.

I'd go pre-built and modify.

Should be some themes available for it, and just make some graphics and modify the CSS, and you'll be set.

If I had the bucks I would have it custom made. As it were, I'm open only to free and open source ones. I found some good social-type sites supposedly made with Drupal + CCK and View modules. Do you think it would be too ambitious for a newbie to set-up Drupal to be a networking site?
