I prefer vbulletin 'coz
No need for vBulletin to keep its own separate search tables
Faster because MySQL can handle the indices
Boolean searches
More relevant results
Easier on the server
Disadvantages is thta the MySQL indices may be bigger than vBulletin's.

Hey cheater. Thanks for your feedback. Indeed, I am not yet tired of IPB; and my members love it. I have considered switching before - but it will be a big change when/if it happens, and for at least the next few months I can't spend the time on it that it deserves. For now, IPB works great for what I need it to - (with the possible exception of the calendar. That's been a BIG contentious bone for a long time - grr) and until I can afford to hire someone to manage the site, I'll probably stick with it.

I run both VB and SMF sites.

The only thing that VB is lacking to make is 'soar' ahead is a portal this is more than just a hack. Subdreamer is ok, vbadvanced is good too, but one written by jelsoft would be cool.

I don't know why, because there's no evidence, but I'm gonna guess VBulletin.

LOL!!!

phpBB2 is your best bet for learning (IMO), it does not need linux, it has the largest database of add-ons and because of its already long lifetime, it has a massive and helpful user-base in its support forums.

It has been losing popularity over the last couple of years but as soon as phpBB3 is finally released it looks like it will take its place as the number one again.
Another reason to use phpBB2 is it will allow you to get to know the community while the wait for phpBB3.
If you haven't got much time, and want to see what the new phpbb3 can offer, just try it out on this host : create forum

Hope this can help!
