I have ran a competition here that I gave away free domain names for 100 posts. It worked really well.

I got some really good members and it didn't cost all that much.

Run a competition, as noted above. Give away prizes that target your audience (i.e. computer hardware for a computer tech forum). Giving away cash generally tends to turn heads as well.

Also, try advertising a bit more. Sign up for Google AdWords and use the pay-per-click method.

In addition to the competition, and please note Envy's advice, dont offer graphics cards to your Barbie forum

Getting some really interested mods to work on your forum, they will initiate discussions that will draw the audicence and get participation. Also get trafic to your forum, and maybe post some post yourself or get some one to post there.

The competition for the free domains HERE is over. However, namecheap.com offers them for like 9 bucks.

That's one way to get the members going at it. I like domain prizes, more useful and practical than giving away points for colored sigs for something.

Another useful competition (for the webmaster) is for keyword-focused short articles. That'll fill up your forum with quality-content that both humans and spiders will love.

Competitions, especially with cash prizes. Always draw me in.

They all sound like great ideas.I don't think I have ever joined a forum that had prizes or anything so sounds good to me . Also you can add some forum games.
