Default Faster PC

I want a faster PC, but I don't have enough money to buy another one. I'm thinking of buying RAM. My computer's memory is only 512. Will it help greatly if I upgrade to 1G?

Hi!

It depends on you processor and how fast you want it to be. Generally, more RAM can improve a PCs performance. For Celerons, another 512 would be enough while a P4 will breath easier with 1 gig. There are other ways of optimizing performance like tweaking your OS and regularly cleaning it of spyware and viruses (ccleaner, spybot, and ad-aware are useful). Also consider lighter open source aps like abiword and gnumeric.

Ram will increase pc performance, i would suggest getting 2 1gig bars and installing them. Also consider cleaning computer and formating it.

Yes computers (especially macs) love ram.

You'll definitely see an increase in performance if you add more memory. I agree with the suggestion to go to 2GB, though - it makes the world of difference.

There are some things you might want to consider. Does your motherboard have the capability of adding additional RAM. What speed is the current processor? What are your reasons for wanting the computer to be faster?

The reason for the asking the last question is that if you are surfing the internet and want a faster connection the above mentioned things might not be the answer. Although a faster processor and more RAM can help.

You cannot simply say adding RAM will help the computer speed, a computer wont be increased by adding only one thing, unless that one thing is the only thing dragging it behind, all components need to be to-par with each other.

Windows Vista has a nice tool for finding what would be good to update, it has something called "Windows Index" and gives your hardware a rating between 0 and 6, with 6 being the highest and 0 being the lowest, and then you simply update the lowest ones

i think the effect of higher RAM can only be seen if you are working with programs that are very heavy and also games which require good amount of resolution. for normal processes you wont find much difference. just try to keep your computer clean by deleting all unnecessary things like movies and stuff which can slow down your computer considerably.
