Your iPod Could Kill You
By Robert | May 11, 2007
As if the world wasn’t worried enough about electromagnetic radiation from cell phones. Apparently we now have another killer on our hands, the Apple iPod.
According to a study presented by a 17-year-old high school student to a meeting of heart specialists on Thursday, Your iPod may cause your pacemaker to fail unexpectedly.
If you’re not a big fan of animal testing try walking into a room full of 100 year old folks and whip out your iPod and see what happens, or not it’s up to you.
The study tested the effect of the iPod on each pacemaker patient. Electrical interference over half of the time and the iPod was only held 2 inches away from the chest of the testie (I don’t know who would volunteer for this but I will give them full credit for courage). In some cases there was interference detached at almost 18 inches away from the chest.
The iPod interfering with the telemetry equipment caused the pacemakers to misread the heart’s pacing and in one case caused the pacemaker to stop functioning altogether.
The study was held at the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Institute at Michigan State University. The results were presented at the Heart Rhythm Society annual meeting in Denver.
I have always wondered why people would submit them self’s to such tests. If I were unlucky enough to be fitted with a pacemaker the last thin I would do is go out of my way to try and make it stop.
