iPhone Vulnerabilities Could Create Havoc
By Robert | November 6, 2007
Apple recently announced that iPhone units shipped reached the point of 1.12 million and all this in just three months since the launch. We could actually say that the popularity the mobile phone is showing could rival some personal computers on the market. One interesting fact surfaced recently and it made experts worry about the consequences. It seems that Apple’s iPhone is built around a security model that made Microsoft vulnerable for around 10 years.
The iPhone shows one huge problem from this point of view. Every single application on the mobile phone works as root, which basically means a full system privilege associated. Such a fact will lead to the possibility of gaining control of the entire device if any application shows a vulnerability that can be exploited. In the past we noticed the same big problem in having a big role on the Windows malware problems, which started in 1999 with the Melissa virus. It still continues today so even now we can say we did not get rid of the problem.
Malware can not really have an impact on the Internet capabilities of the iPhone because of the limited bandwidth it comes with but can still have a huge impact on users. A hacker can gain control of the device and make different phone calls without the owner knowing about it, can save text messages and a list of phone calls made or received. The iPhone can virtually transform in a listening device and the location can be tracked via WiFi access points. Even photos can be snapped without the owner knowing about it. We need to start worrying as in February Apple will launce a special software development kit that will make it possible for third party developers to create various applications for the iPhone. It can lead to problems Apple, so beware!
