Apple and EMI Music Have Droped DRM
By Robert | April 3, 2007

Apple and EMI have decided to drop DRM (Digital Rights Management) from all of their music in the iTunes music store. This comes shortly after Steve Jobs public stated that he does not like DRM in the iTunes music store and it is only there because the music companies will refuse to let Apple sell music that does not have some kind of DRM. I believe that Apple like having DRM on their music just as much as the record companies do as it make all music that is bought on the iTunes music only work on the Apple iPod. Talk about having the market cornered.
There are plenty of online music stores that off DRM free music and continue to offer a great selection of music. So by saying that the record companies will not allow their music to be sold without DRM seems like Apple trying to justify their reasoning for screwing over their customers.
I think that DRM is the worst thing and music companies can do to protect their assets. All it seems to do is punish the honest people. It will not stop the hackers out there from stealing music because with a very small amount of work it can be cracked. But when it comes time for average Joe’s iPod to break and replace it with something other than an iPod he will have to make a big decision. That decision is do you throw away potentially $100’s if not $1000’s worth of music or just buy another iPod. In most cases people will just buy another iPod to save them self’s the trouble an in my opinion that is not fair and very wrong.
In short Apple love DRM as much as the music companies and the only reason that it is being dropped for EMI music is because not only does Steve Job’s need to back his claim that he hates DRM but also in a very short amount of time iTunes will be the only online music store with DRM’ed music.
My 2 Cents.
